Grid data, trading operations, and a systems brief
Online or on campus

You are not training as a power-systems engineer in a lab. You learn how operational software represents an asset, a price, and an exception, and you write a systems brief. Frontier Innovation University teaches this award online and, where a cohort is formed, on campus. The 180 credits (1,800 notional hours) on this page are the sum of the 8 courses in the curriculum, so the transcript and the prospectus describe the same load. MSc Energy Software Systems is taught as one award, not a list of unrelated modules. The published length is 18 months, and the credit total is 36. Students move from The Data Object through The Data Object; Exceptions; Price and Physics; Systems Brief, and finish on Systems Brief. Each course has a question, a method, and a submission. In this field, students draw the system, name the constraint that binds it, and compare two responses. Reading is a system description, an indicator note, and a project option paper. The artefact a marker expects is a recommendation for one decision, with the evidence and the downside. The award is built so that a graduate can do the following in practice: Describe an energy data object Trace an exception through a workflow Separate a price signal from a physical constraint Teaching assumes the student can read a source, attempt a problem before the seminar, and revise after feedback. Attendance at live seminars is part of the design. The capstone or final course must use the methods of the earlier courses; a project that ignores them does not pass. This course does not confer a professional engineering licence. The pages for each course name the topics that are examined. Those topics are the syllabus. A brochure line is not a substitute for them.
Assessment is coursework on each taught module plus the final project named in the curriculum. Results are recorded as credit hours against each module. Fees are the figures published by Frontier Innovation University for this award; this page does not add a separate tuition claim.

| ESS501 | Software design and the interface between parts Software design and the interface between parts (ESS501) is a course on MSc Energy Software Systems. It carries 20 credits and 200 notional learning hours, at 10 hours per credit. The course is taught at master's level. Students compare a weaker method, judge the evidence, and state what the result does not show. The chapters are the syllabus. Each chapter is a class of work this course assesses. Preparation is the reading, dataset, or case for that chapter. Seminar time is spent on the decision, the calculation, or the draft. The student revises after feedback. A pass requires the method named in the chapters, evidence a marker can check, and a stated limit on what the result does not show. The course is offered on the Austin campus route and on the tuition-free online pathway.
