Why Frontier Innovation University Keeps Its Online Degrees to a Few Hundred Dollars

Frontier Innovation University's leadership has set out, in a short address to applicants, why the university prices its online degrees in a low published band — tuition-free online study for the whole award — rather than the thousands charged elsewhere.

The argument is partly financial. Once a module exists — designed, recorded, staffed with a teaching team — the cost of teaching one more online student is small. The marginal cost is marking, supervision time and support. "Charging a working student ten thousand for a place that costs us a fraction of that to deliver is a toll on a bridge that is already built," the address said.

The argument is mostly institutional. Frontier Innovation University was founded in 1974 to widen access. "If we had a technology that let us teach anyone, anywhere, to the same standard, and we put a five-figure price on it, we would have to ask what had gone wrong with us," the address said. "A low, published, honest fee is the point."

The address is careful about what a low price does not mean. It does not mean the program is easy, that assessment is relaxed, or that the university is not accountable for quality. Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours.
