Frontier Innovation University's MSc Public Health Keeps Fieldwork in the Student's Own Health System

Frontier Innovation University has restated the design of its MSc Public Health for the new intake. The program treats health systems as they are — under-staffed, politically constrained, and full of people who cannot wait for a student to come back from a foreign campus.

Core study covers epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, health-systems management, outbreak response and community engagement. The distinctive requirement is that every major assignment produces something usable in the student's own setting: a surveillance plan, a policy brief, an intervention design with a realistic budget and staffing model.

Tomasz Kowalski, studying from Warsaw, is designing a supervision roster for community health workers that fits existing transport and salary rules rather than an idealised system. "The assignment is not 'describe best practice'," he said. "It is 'design something my district could actually run next year'."

Ethics is taught as an operational skill: consent, data protection, triage under scarcity, and honest communication when the evidence is incomplete. Assessment includes surveillance plans, policy briefs, an economic evaluation and an oral defence of the capstone intervention.

The program is delivered online for a low published semester fee. Live seminars are scheduled so that night-shift clinicians can attend at least one session per module; recordings carry captions. The library has expanded its public-health journal subscriptions so that a student is not blocked by paywalls.

Fieldwork is conducted in the student's own health system with a local supervisor and a Frontier academic supervisor. Applicants with clinical, nursing, pharmacy, environmental-health, laboratory or ministry backgrounds are encouraged to apply, and the School runs employer briefings for organizations sponsoring staff.

The School also offers the PhD Public Health for those moving into a research career, with advanced epidemiologic methods, biostatistics and implementation science.

Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours. Frontier will not pretend a program is light. Applicants should plan their weekly hours before accepting an offer and ask direct questions at the open webinars if a page reads as vague.
